Mysterious things sometime happen around Big Spirit Lake. The story is recalled that a young man and his girlfriend were sailing out on Big Spirit Lake. Suddenly a gray and yellow bi-plane appeared overhead and dove right toward their boat with a loud roar scaring the young girl so badly that she fell overboard and into the water. Both the young man and his girlfriend were so angry that they reported the registration numbers under the plane’s wing to the local authorities.

After an investigation of the numbers, the officers determined the plane belonged to a stunt pilot who had died in a plane crash with that very bi-plane many years before that time. Numerous other area picnickers have also had encounters with this mysterious plane piloted by the ghost pilot of long ago. So keep your eyes and ears open when you visit this area.

Story paraphrased from “Ghosts of the Iowa Great Lakes” by Bruce Carlson

Gilbert Park, just north of the community of Spirit Lake, was established in 1874, long before airplanes were around. This park has seen many changes over the years, but one can still imagine the drone of an airplane as it sweeps over the lake.
Public access?:
The park is open to the public, and there is adequate parking by the dock and picnic shelter house.

Visting hours:
The park is open year round during daylight hours.
