The wooded land where this Manor House stands was purchased in 1812 with 23 acres, a cottage and a carpenters lodge. Then by 1816 the house prior to the one standing today had been built by John Thomas Dawson.
When Mr Dawson died in 1850 his eldest son inherited the house. He was the Reverend John Dawson who died 20 years later leading to an inheritance dispute. A bundle of letters had been placed underneath Reverend Dawson's body and these were thought to be the key to the dispute. The gravestone was lifted and coffin opened to reveal the letters were love-letters between the Reverend and his first wife.
After this the house was owned by Justice of the Peace, William Long Fitzpatrick. He commissioned the local architects Usher & Anthony to build the present house in 1901. Above the entrance door the Fitzpatrick family crest can be seen.
The house was used as a Guest House after World War II and as a hospital for the Ministry of Supply. Then before finally becoming a hotel in 1973 it was used as a research facility.
