Nostalgia exudes from the tiny community of Nora, South Dakota. Once a bustling town with two stores, a blacksmith shop and a creamery back in the late 1800’s, Nora now boasts a population of 5. A handful of homes surround the remaining historic general store at the junction of Co Rd. 15 and 475th Avenue. Formerly a typical rural business where residents could find everything from food to flannel, the building is now a private residence. The public is invited to gather around the pot belly stove each December for the annual Christmas music celebration, to sing songs around the pipe organ, and to share stories of the community’s past.
A visitor gets a glimpse of another era just by driving by the Nora General Store. Just looking at the front yard, one gets a glimpse of another era. The old black horse-drawn buggy is a tribute to days gone by, and the old wooden barrel sits under the rain spout to collect wash water. Old slatted benches await the next guest to come and chat. Does anyone still give away S & H Green Stamps anymore?
