Erected in 1932 by the City Council in memory of John J. Ward (1866 - 1914). Ward, a native of London Ontario was a prominent reform-minded politician instrumental in a host of public works undertakings. These included creating Lakeshore Boulevard, both the Landsdowne and the Brock Subways, and lowering the rail lines below grade acress South Parkdale, thereby elimination all level crossings. He also led the drive for a new main sweage system, better water filtration and the hydro electrification of the city of Toronto.
