Although the modern sign shows a singer on the stage, the date stone has a carved star on it.

The singer looks like he is a song and dance man appearing in a vaudeville show.
However high up on the building is a date stone from 1897 with a carved star on it.
I don’t know whether the carved star was there because the pub was always called the star, or whether the star inspired a change of name. However the star as a pub name often refers to the Star of Bethlehem. If that was the original inspiration then it would be appropriate to have the star high up on the building.
