This was the second Barton School the first school was built about 1856 and they sold the old building for $27. So the cost of the new building $49 minus the $27 equals $22. The total cost to the town for the new building was $22 and I bet some of the residents thought that was extravagant.
The Barton School District observed its centennial on Sunday 26, 1955. Festivities included a pot-luck picnic on the school grounds. Over 100 former teachers and students were in attendance. Everyone present enjoyed looking over old photos, renewing acquaintances, and sharing memories of their days at the Barton School.
The first major renovation came July 11, 1955. The district borrowed $8000 for modernization of the school. Renovation included boys and girls toilets, a kitchen, a furnace room and a hallway. The addition was placed along the south wall of the building.
The school was close at the end of the school year in 1972 ending its years as a rural one room school house. On August 14, 1973 the Farmington Town bought the former Barton School. The entrance to the school was changed and the old doorway was bricked-up except for the glass blocks placed at the top of the doorway. There was a ramp built on the north side of the building to the rear entrance for the handicap entrance. The bell was removed from the bell tower.
Information was obtained from the Waupaca County Historical Society.
