This "Castle" is no more than two stone throws from Devizes castle. The original wooden castle was built in 1080 but burned down 33 years later. The second castle was built out of stone (it is not recorded whether there was ever a straw castle here!)

It was dismantled due to a order of Cromwell's parliament in 1648. There is limited evidence on site of it ever having been there now.

The picture on the pub sign is a fanciful depiction of how it may have looked.
