Artichokes were introduced to the UK by the Dutch in 1530. They were first grown in Henry VIII's garden and like a number of other new introductions to the country, there was a great deal of excitement caused. Some pubs were mistakenly re-named "The Pineapple". It's difficult to imagine how though.
Artichokes are a member of the thistle family.
