Robert L Caret, president of San Jose State University from 1995 to 2003, joined forces with former San Jose Mayor Susan Hammer in 1996 to promote the idea of the city\University library. Under his leadership, the University forced an innovative partnership with the city of San Jose, leading to the creation and opening of the Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Library in 2003.
