A giant needle and thread sculpture between Forster Square railway station and the city centre.

This sculpture was commissioned by Bradford as part of a regeneration scheme in 1999. The idea was to improve routes into the city from the Forster Square Railway Station.
The needle was placed at the end of Drake Street directly opposite the entrance to the station. Duke Street leads directly into the shopping centre of the city.
The idea of a needle reflects Bradford’s past as a major woollen textile producing city. When the textiles came off the looms burlers and menders tidied any loose ends using needles. It also represents a way of connecting the station to the centre.
The thread through the eye of the needle is made of fibre optics and lights up at night.
