Famous grammarian, author of the English Grammar, was born June 7, 1745, in a house near this point. Robert Murray, his father, owned a mill here from 1745 to 1746.
Lindley Murray at the age of 14 was to work in an office in New York, for his Quaker father. But, he ran away to New Jersey to a school. ( Isn't it suppose to be the other way around, you run away from school to get a job.) He was brought back and after much discussion he went to school and became a lawyer. I've read 2 articles and they both agree Lindley went to York, England but why is for 2 different reasons. One says he was able to retire and another said he was a loyalist during the war and was forced to leave. In York, he settled near a Quarker community and became the largest selling author of textbooks. He wrote "English Grammar", millions of copies sold in the United States (but there was no copyright laws here) and 4 million in England. He also wrote the "English Reader" used in the US from 1815 to 1840s. He wrote 11 books! The English Reader was replaced by McGuffy Reader.
