Sir Hugh Owen, born on the 14th January 1804, died the 20th November 1881, was a significant Welsh educator with strong standing in the local history of West Wales. The library on the campus which houses all the books for the campus bar the Science texts which are held separately on the IMAPs block.
Hugh Owen was a Methodist philanthropist he was one of the original promoters of the University College of Wales at Aberystwyth. The university of Wales was founded in Aberystwyth as the first of the Welsh Universities. He is buried at Abney Park Cemetery in Stoke Newington, London, but his legacy to the local education and area is still common knowledge.
The main library at Aberystwyth University is the 'Hugh Owen', as is Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen (School), a secondary school in Caernarfon. The Welsh phrase is often written as "Ysgol Syr Huw Owen". The word sir translating to 'syr' as the 'y' in Welsh is pronounced as an 'i'.
