General Dynamics F16A/B "Fighting Falcon"
1988 - 1995

In February 1972, the US Air Force issued a request for proposals for a lightweight, low-cost, highly maneuverable fighter with a mach 2 speed capability. Five companies responded, including General Dynamics of Fort Worth, Texas, who was awarded a contract for two YF16s in April of the same year. The first YF16 flight was made February 4, 1975 at Edwards AFB, CA. The USAF announced in January 1975 that the F16 was chosen for a 650 plane production, which included F16A and two-seat F16B. This was increased to 1388 aircraft in 1977.

The F16 were first delivered to the USAF in 1978 and to Belgium, Netherlands, and Israel in 1979. The Air National Guard received its first F16 in 1983 and 177th Fighter Wing received its first F16 in February 1988.

The 177th Fighter Wing's last F16's were flown to Arizona for storage on February 13, 1995 and the unit's F16B was transferred to the Puerto Rico Air National Guard on Feburary 14, 1995.
