The holy well is dedicated to St. Tola who founded the nearby monastery. St. Tolas died about A.D. 735 and the monastery was originally known as Dísert-Tola, the quiet place (literally, the "desert") of St. Tola.

Access to the holy well is across pastureland occupied by friendly cattle, do not startle or harass them.
