Sir Sanford Fleming was born in Kirkaldy Scotland and emigrated to Canada in 1845 at the age of seventeen. Famous in Canada as the Chief Engineer of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which tied the nation together with a ribbon of steel, and he also designed Canada's first postage stamp, the 'Three Penny Beaver'.

Internationally he is better known as the 'Father of Standard Time'. Fleming recommended the standard to the Royal Canadian Institute in 1879 proposing dividing the earth into 24 'time zones' and ended the practice of each jurisdiction setting their own time. Sir Sandford Fleming was behind the adoption of the present time meridians in both Canada and the U.S. The practice was adopted universally in 1884.

He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1897 in recognition of a lifetime of achievements.
