The Teacher Training School Building at the former San Diego State Normal School was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 17, 1999.

A Normal School was a training center for teachers. The San Diego State Normal School was renamed the San Diego State Teachers College and was moved to a new location. That school is now called San Diego State University, a deviation from the normal naming procedure for California State Universities. If the normal naming method had been followed the name would have been CSUSD for California State University - San Diego.
The San Diego Unified School District took over the old Teachers College campus for use as its main offices and named it the Education Center. The various buildings north of the main office building were called Annexes and given numbers to individually identify them. The Teacher Training Building was Annex 1, but was considered structurally deficient and was used exclusively for storage. Recently, community interest was expressed in renovating the building for use as a library and community center. Evaluation by a structural engineer determined that it could be retrofitted and made structurally sound for that use.
