Gowan Bridge creates a little wiggle on what was the main road, until the bypass, for cars. Many did not make the move. The Cut Mark is on the coping stone nearest the beer garden. Often dislodged.

Staveley was the main road in to the Lake District until the long overdue bypass took all the traffic.

In December 2015, many bridges were affected by a storm, called Desmond. Gowan Bridge was one of them and is being rebuilt.
