Marker Text:
For thousands of years the river scene at this village site hardly changed. The stream was full of fish, served as a trade route for neighboring tribes, and attracted wildlife to this green corridor. While the river fostered a life of bounty and a sense of homeland, it also became a conduit for change -- Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery in 1805, gold miners in the 1860s, and tourists in the 1880s -- altering the meaning of the river forever.
