The Box Elder Courthouse evolved over time from a small basement covered with a temporary roof in 1856 to the magnificent structure with classical styling seen today. The temporary building was used for meetings and theater productions. In 1857 adobe walls were erected on the basement foundation, but a strong wind partially destroyed them. After the walls were rebuilt and a roof added, the building was used for community gatherings, social functions, school, and government meetings. Over time several additions were added and by 1911 court was being held in the structure.
