Per the college website,
"Washington College was founded in 1782 under the patronage of George Washington, who consented to give his name to the College and who served five years on the Board of Visitors and Governors, before beginning his presidency of the United States."

The bronze statue of George Washington is a classic standing pose with a tricorn hat in his hand cast in 1947 by Lee Lawrie. It is located at the north end of the Campus Lawn on the college campus.
