The Rock Church, or Auburn Ward Meetinghouse, is unique in that rock was not a common building material in the Star Valley of Wyoming. For years it was the only rock structure and the largest building in the small community of Auburn. Even after a larger church meetinghouse was built in Auburn, the Rock Church was still the preferred meeting place during cold winters since it gave greater protection from colder temperatures.

In addition to providing a place of worship for the local Mormons, who comprised the majority of the town's population, it was used for social gatherings, theater productions, dances, Boy Scout activities, and all manner of other community functions. As is common with most LDS meeting places, once they have outlived their usefulness to the LDS Church, they are sold or donated to other organizations which can put them to productive use. In 1974 the property was deeded to the Auburn Historical Society and serves today as a community center for Auburn and the surrounding countryside.

The property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 13, 1985.
