Located at about the half-way mark between Prudhoe Bay and Valdez, this marker is visited by thousands of tourists each year.
The Trans Alaska Pipeline System runs about 800 miles from the north slope oilfields at Prudhoe Bay south to the ice-free port of Valdez, Alaska. At the location of the sign, the pipeline is above ground, which gives the visitor an opportunity to see some of the construction techniques used to build the ~US$8B pipeline.
Historic significance: The controversial Trans Alaska Pipeline System was constructed between 29 April 1974 and 20 June 1977. The Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, the organization created to build and maintain the pipeline, erected this sign (and the adjacent visitors center), along with other interpretive displays, as part of their community outreach program.
Location nearest to where you live now: The location on this sign closest to where we live now (metropolitan Washington, DC) is Valdez, which is located about 350 miles south of the sign.
