The town dates back to before 1895, but the small village is now home to only a handful of homes and a single church. The community sits at the crossroads of 360th Street and Garfield Avenue, 3 miles west of state Hwy 75. The only other road in town is a short side street …named Carmel Street!
The Biblical Mount Carmel is a coastal ridge which runs 24 miles and then drops into Israel’s Mediterranean Sea. In the Old Testament the prophet Elijah was recorded to have confronted the priests of Baal on the mountain for disobeying God’s commands (I Kings 18:17-46). Mt. Carmel was also used as a symbol of beauty in Isaiah 35:2 as the “splendor of Carmel” and in Solomon’s praise: “your head crowns you like Mount Carmel” Song of Solomon 7:5. In New Testament times Mt. Carmel was the stronghold where the Essenes sought refuge for their group.
Bible verse: I Kings 18:17-46, Isaiah 35:2, Song of Solomon 7:5
