Catherine Palace is named after the Russian Empress Catherine I. In her order at today's palace was a German architect Johann-Friedrich Braunstein built a summer tsar residence. Already in 1752, this palace was at the instance of her daughter Elizabeth demolished. At the same place Elizabeth’s Italian architect Carlo Bartolomeo Rastrelli built a new 325 m long Rococo palace. It was completed in July 1956.
Today the palace is open to the public and is a popular destination for tourists bound for the nearby St. Petersburg. Around the palace are situated beautiful parks, but visitors are mainly interested in golden, richly decorated interiors of the palace.
