The eight foot golden menorah, the embedded Star of David, the curved rows of seating reminiscent of the shape of a menorah and the replica of the Western Wall all point to an outdoor synagogue in the Galilee Prayer Garden in San Antonio, TX.

The menorah, the Star of David symbols, and the replica of the Western Wall make one think of Israel, Jerusalem and Judaism. The oversized Ten Commandment tablets, the small pond shaped like the Sea of Galilee with boulders mounted with plaques honoring selected biblical cities in Israel support the feel for a pro-Israeli environment. However, the New Testament scripture quotations interspersed on the plaques and and the direct references to Jesus and his ministry in and around the cities honored by the plaques make one question how Jewish the congregation that sponsored this prayer garden really is. Nonetheless, the structures are in place that would certainly accommodate preaching and teaching, whether from the Torah or from the New Testament. There is even a large, covered "gazebo" (albeit rectangular in shape) that is wheelchair accessible included in the design of this outdoor synagogue. The Galilee Prayer Garden was "dedicated on March 28, 1999 as a sanctuary of prayer, worship and praise", according to the name plate attached to a large landscape boulder on the grounds. This facility is located near 6610 HWY 90 West, San Antonio, TX 78227. It is between The San Antonio 9/11 Memorial and the New Life Christian Center along the access road of HWY 90/IH-10 West, just outside of Lackland AFB. The Galilee Prayer Garden and the 9/11 Memorial are both privately owned but are open to the public and accessible at any time at no cost. The memorial, the prayer garden and the New Life center are operated by the same people although each group is organized separately.
