This great relief carving was created by Jay Tschetter of Denton, Nebraska. The 16’ x 6’ brick sculpture graces the front of the F & M Bank on the corner of Dakota & 21st Streets in South Sioux City. It was near here that the Lewis and Clark party camped as they worked their way up the Missouri River on their assigned expedition.
A plaque next to the carving states:
In 1804 Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark journeyed up the Missouri River with the Corps of Discovery on an expedition ordered by President Thomas Jefferson. Along with their search for the Northwest Passage, the mission included mapping their route, recording scientific discoveries, and establishing friendly relations with the indigenous people. By August they had reached the area of what is now Siouxland.
In this scene, a medal is presented bearing Jefferson’s image to the Oto Chiefs as Captain Lewis expresses the desire of the U.S. Government to cultivate good will.
