Wallen Ridge is named after Elisha Wallen, the leader of the first known group of Long Hunters in the area that passed by here in 1761. He followed a trace that was a Native American trade and war route that passed through the valley (Powell's Valley). Wallen's Creek near the base of Powell's Mountain is also named after him. Elisha Wallen is most likely the person that told Daniel Boone of this route, which is now known as the Daniel Boone Wilderness Road, to the Gap in the Cumberland Mountain when he returned to the Yadkin Valley in present North Carolina.
