On the south side of the City Hall building at 16 W. 9th Street in Shawnee, is a time capsule commemorating the bicentennial of the USA. The time capsule reads: "Shawnee Bicentennial community time capsule Buried Dec. 31, 1976 to be opened Jan. 1 2076."
Just to the north of the time capsule stands a flag pole with a concrete base. The plaque is very difficult to read, but shows the date 1905 and a list of community leaders at that time, including the Mayor, Clerk and City Council
