The roots of this museum go back to a private collection of the 1780s. The collection was donated to the public in 1813. These days many cast replica collections were founded throughout Europe. They served the desire for education and experience of the classic Greek and Roman cultures in the days before photography or cheap and fast travel. The collection was made public in 1830 and moved to the Museum an der Augustinergasse (now the location of the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Cultures). In 1887 it moved into the Basel Kunsthalle, where a new wing known as the "Skulpturenhalle" had been built especially for it.
In the early 20th century the general opinions changed. These types of collections were not considered to be valuable anymore, there was no interest in mere copies, many cast replica collections disappeared forever. Even in Basel, where the collection stayed complete and intact, it had to be warehoused due to lack of space from 1927 to 1963.
In 1963 it could be re-opened in a new building as an outpost of the Antikenmuseum Basel. It has more than tripled in size since then; with more than 2000 casts it is the largest collection of its kind in Switzerland and one of the most recognized worldwide.
Nowadays the focus is on bringing parts together where the original works are split into pieces and spread across museums all over the world.
The most famous of these works has been the unique "Parthenon Project", that assembled casts of every surviving sculptural remnant from the Parthenon Temple in Athens and now shows their original arrangements.
