This station is a US Coast & Geodetic Survey standard bench mark disk, set in a railroad bridge abutment, and is located in Boscawen, NH. Located at the junction of the Contoocook River and the Merrimack River, the mark is set in the northwest abutment wing wall of B&MRR bridge #80.23, which is the north bridge at a small island where the Hannah Dustin monument stands. The mark is easily accessible; there is a commuter parking lot on U.S. Route 4 just west after the bridge crossing the Merrimack River, park in the lot and pack to the station following the signs directing you to the Hannah Dustin monument. The mark is on the right side of the bridge, just before you cross it as you head south.
Check out the monument while you're there. The historical markers tell the story of what happened on that island. According to history, Hannah Dustin and four others were kidnapped by 12 Abenaki Indians in Haverhill, MA, and were going to be sent north to be sold as slaves. While camping on the island one of their captors killed Hannah Dustin's infant child, and Hannah, along with the other hostages, exacted revenge by staging a bloody attack on their captors on midnight of March 30, 1697. The monument, erected in her honor, shows Hannah holding a tomahawk in her right hand, and scalps in her left. There is another monument in Haverhill, MA as well.
