This oil seep is located on a hiking trail (fire road) leading up the west side of Sulphur Mountain. Here oil, gas, and water emerge at the surface through the fractured rock of the Monterey Formation. Visitors to the area may notice a particular odor about the place. This is the scent of hydrogen sulfide gas escaping from the seep and the namesake of the mountain.
The oil seep is located a short distance up Sulphur Mountain Road. The road is closed to traffic but is accessible to hikers, bicyclists, and horseback riders. ATVs are not allowed. Distance from parking to the first seep is approximately 1/4 mile. There are multiple oil seeps at this location, but all are within a few hundred feet of one another along the road.
