John Beverly Amos was a lawyer, politician, entrepreneur, and most importantly, the founder of one of the largest insurance companies in the world, AFLAC. Born in Alabama, but reared and educated in Florida, John Beverly eventually started his own insurance company based out of Columbus, GA. Concurret with leading AFLAC to success, John Amos also was very active with local, state and national politics, being very politically active for causes in which he strongly believed. As he succeeded in the insurance business and in politics, Mr. Amos became influential through his philantropic giving as well. He funded many colleges and universities and influenced the Army to develop the School of the Americas at nearby Fort Benning in Columbus, GA. (1)
The sculptor was Lisa Milligan. There is a plaque which includes the following inscription: JOHN BEVERLY AMOS/JUNE 5, 1924-AUGUST 13, 1990/HE LIVED A HAPPY LIFE AND/HOPED HE MADE A DIFFERENCE/TO HIS FELLOWMAN signed The bust is made of metal and the base is made of brick and concrete. The sculpture is bust of John Beverly Amos with short hair, a tie, and a jacket, atop a base and the bust is approximately 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. The base is approximately 4 ft. 8 inches. x 17 1/2 inches. x 17 1/2 inches. (2)
