Basilika byla založena roku 920 jako druhý krestanský kostel v tehdejší oblasti Prahy. Roku 973 byl knížetem Boleslavem II. založen ženský klášter rádu benediktinu a kostel se stal jeho soucástí.
S výjimkou prucelí a nekterých prvku interiéru si kostel uchoval svuj románský charakter daný prestavbou po požáru Pražského hradu v roce 1142. Vlastní kostel je trojlodní bazilika se dvema vežemi v prucelí, ctvercovým knežištem s apsidou a trojlodní kryptou.
Kaple svaté Ludmily a vetšina nástenných maleb pochází z pocátku 12. století. Dosud jsou zachovány nástenné malby Nebeského Jeruzaléma a postavy Ježíše Krista, Panny Marie a sv. Jana Evangelisty na klenbe knežište a kaple Panny Marie a v její apside. Náhrobek svaté Ludmily pochází ze 14. století a byl patrne vyroben Parlérovskou hutí.
Barokní prucelí bylo dostaveno koncem 17. století a je nejspíše dílem Francesca Carattiho. Sochy na prucelí vytvoril Jan Jirí Bendl. V letech 1718 až 1722 byla významných ceským architektem Františkem Maxmiliánem Kankou pristavena kaple svatého Jana Nepomuckého. Sochu svetce s andely vytvoril Ferdinand Maxmilián Brokoff. Dnešní vzhled, který do znacné míry odpovídá podobe baziliky ve 12. století, dal bazilice v letech 1888 až 1918 významný puristický architekt Ludvík Lábler.

St. George's Basilica is the oldest church building within Prague Castle. The basilica was founded by Vratislaus I of Bohemia in 920. It is dedicated to Saint George.
The basilica was substantially enlarged in 973 with the addition of the Benedictine St. George's Abbey. It was rebuilt following a major fire in 1142. The Baroque façade dates from the late 17th century. A Gothic style chapel dedicated to Ludmila of Bohemia holds the tomb of the saint. The shrines of Vratislav and Boleslaus II of Bohemia are also in the basilica. The abbess of this community had the right to crown the Bohemian queen consorts.
The building now houses the 19th century Bohemian Art Collection of National Gallery in Prague. It also serves as a concert hall.
