A ride on the Rivercat service can be a relaxing experiance and journeys can start or end at the Parramatta Wharf. The wharf is at the head of the tidal reach of Parramatta River.
At the first settlement of Parramatta in 1788, a trip by boat up the Parramatta River was the only way between Parramatta and Sydney until roads, and later railways, were constructed.
It was not until the 1990's that the Rivercat services were instituted with relatively low height vessels so as to fit under bridges crossing the river - particularly at high tide. The services survive although there has been the threat of withdrawl as a result of the economics of the service. At times of very low tides, services can be suspended because of the shallow depth of the river at this point.
