This Thomas Rowe designed Victorian Gothic church of dressed sandstone was built by George Peters in 1871 for the Congregational Church.
Mr. John Fairfax, the founder of the Sydney Morning Herald, laid the foundation stone.
Its name was changed to St Peter's Uniting Church after the Methodist Church of Australasia, Presbyterian Church of Australia, and Congregational Union of Australia came together under the Basis of Union in 1977.
Old photographs show the building was used by the Evangelical Chinese Church in 1996.
The National Trust listed church hall behind the church was in danger of being demolished in 2008 and replaced with a 13 story hotel. Parramatta council rejected the proposal.
The building is currently being offered for lease as a hotel.
