At some time, believed to be 1951, and replacing an earlier structure, the weir at Charles Street was constructed. The Parramatta River was lined with concrete downstream of the Marsden Street Weir somewhat earlier.
The purpose of this weir and channel was most likely to provide for a more aesthetically pleasing environment where otherwise the change in tides would alternately cover and uncover the stream bed at this location.
The writer has been unable to find much history of this weir.
In more recent times, a fishlift has been constructed to enable native bass to travel upriver. The weir also forms a part of a walkway along the lined edges of the river.
