When the Beeching axe fell on the Midland & Great Northern line in north Norfolk some of the buildings from the line were kept standing. One of them was the station at Sheringham and - of course - it had the inevitable post box on the platform.
The Poppy Line is the restored line which runs from Holt to Sheringham on the tracks of the old Midland and Great Northern system. Initially the station buildings at Sheringham were leased to the NNR but in 2001 the company bought it outright.
The post box is still in position but mail is not now collected from it by the Post Office. As the label above the box states it is 'a private posting box for the use of visitors. Any mail posted here will be re-posted by staff of the North Norfolk Railway.' It does not state, and I don't know if, any special cachet will be added to any mail placed in the box.
The maker's name started with a 'W' but the rest has at some time been obliterated. The - I suspect - original collection time panel is still in place.
