Forty-seven buildings were constructed here in 1942-1943 including a massive hanger to house six blimps for coastal defense and observation during the war. Following the war, the buildings were all re-designated for other uses including some for private interests. The blimp hangar roof was damaged in 1961 by hurricane Carla, then destroyed by fire in 1962, so all that remain are those four concrete corner towers which were too expensive to demolish.
