Kristin developed her 2010 Gold Award Project after recognizing the need for improving literacy skills among dual language students at Waller Elementary School in Burlington, Wisconsin.

She developed Amigos Leyendo-Reading Friends, a weekly after school literacy program. The program provided English and Spanish reading and writing opportunities and social time for sharing cultural experiences for high school mentor and young bilingual student pairs.

A fiesta concluded the six-week program. All students left the program with improved English and Spanish reading skills, a deeper understanding of other cultures, a new awareness of Hispanic cultural heritage in their community, and new friends.
