Frederick Douglass
Born on Tuckahoe Creek, Talbot County; lived as a slave in the St. Michaels area, 1833-1836. Taught self to read and write, conducted clandestine schools for blacks here. Escaped north, became noted abolitionist orator and editor. Returned 1877, as a U.S. Marshall for District of Columbia. Also served as D.C. Recorder of Deeds, U>S. Minister to Haiti.
