This plaque is erected at the larger memorial to the 1992 stand for sovereignty by the Fort McDowell Indian Tribe recognizes Gilbert Davis Jones Sr.

On May 12, 1992 federal agents and marshalls raided the Fort McDowell gaming center to confiscate slot machines installed at the facility. The community banded together to claim its right to exist as a sovereign nation.

The plaque reads:

Gilbert Davis Jones, Sr
Dec 18, 1935 - Feb 21, 2000

"I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid, to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creations and face the world and say, this I have done."

Leadership through sovereignty.
