Utica Square, located at 21st Street and Utica Avenue, opened on May 22, 1952. It is a village-like shopping center which was Tulsa's first suburban shopping center, and its finest. Utica Square is designed to be a small village with streets and curbside parking. The stores include many well known and exclusive shops.
In 1964, Helmerich & Payne purchased the shopping center and added many improvements, such as planting more than 300 trees. Today, it is as well known for its landscaping, as its shopping.
Outside Williams Sonoma, an upscale kitchen accessories store stands a wood carving of a chef, approximately 6 ft. high. It appears to be carved in a tree that once grew at this spot. The chef, dressed in his outfit complete with tall hat, is holding a lobster in his right hand and a bottle of wine in his left. The artist for this carving is Clayton Coss.
