As the Transcontinental Railroad was pushed westward by the Central Pacific crews, Evanston became an important permanent division point for the railroad. As the railroad proceeded west beyond this point, it left the relatively flat plains of southern Wyoming and entered the mountainous territory of eastern Utah. The railroad (now the Union Pacific) has played a key role in the economic fortunes of the city in the many years since it was established.
