Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen
(American b 1929)
(American b1942, d 2009)
Claes Oldenburg is most widely associated with the beginnings of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. His whimsical and, at times, deconstructed forms of everyday objects transform the notion of how sculture is viewed and made. Throughout his career, he collaborated with his wife Coosje to create large-scale monumental installatons worldwide. This four-ton, 19 foot stainless steel and fiberglass sculpture depicts a giant bule and red typewriter eraser with the bristles of the brush turned upward in a graceful, dynamic gesture. This scale is the largest three sculptures the artist team created of the typewriter eraser.
Oldenburg and van Bruggen have collaborated on more than forty large-scale, outdoor sculptures of popular commercial objects installed throughout Europe, Asia and the United States. Their work can be found in numerous public collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; the Chianti Foundation in Marla, Texas; the Los Angeles Museum of contemporary Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Tage Gallery, London.
