The American Guide Series (another waymark category) was a series of United State Guidebooks written as a WPA Project in the 1930's and early 1940's to employ authors during the Great Depression. The New Hampshire Edition (published 1938) has a photo and rich description of the Flume Gorge.
The direction you are looking is East. One thing we noticed as that the pathway/boardwalk has been re-routed (probably several times) since 1938. You can use the rock formations at center right and along the right rock wall of the chasm to confirm this.
