Salem Church was built by local Baptists in 1844 to serve a growing population west of Fredericksburg. The first pastor was John Billingsley, who had previously been the pastor of Salem’s mother church, Massaponax Church, which still stands south of town. During the Civil War this church was the site of a bitter day long battle, which took place on May 3, 1863. As a result of the battle, the church which still stands today was used as a hospital by both sides. Most of the Battlefield around the church has been destroyed by urban development, but remaining on the site is the church itself, the church cemetery and monuments to the 23rd and 15th New Jersey Volunteers. Located adjacent to the church is a cemetery contining about 500-grave of church members dating from the mid-1840's. The cemetery is also the final resting place of several veterans of the Civil War.
