Salem Church was built by local Baptists in 1844 to serve a growing population west of Fredericksburg. The first pastor was John Billingsley, who had previously been the pastor of Salem’s mother church, Massaponax Church, which still stands south of town. During the Civil War this church was the site of a bitter day long battle, which took place on May 3, 1863. As a result of the battle, the church which still stands today was used as a hospital by both sides. Most of the Battlefield around the church has been destroyed by urban development, but remaining on the site is the church itself, the church cemetery and monuments to the 23rd and 15th New Jersey Volunteers. Today the church is maintained as a historical site operated by the National Park Service and is part of the Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania National Battlefield.
