The above inscription is above the door of the Busch mausoleum and means "I came, I saw, I conquered"
and is a good description of Adolphus Busch life.
Adolphus Busch was born July 10, 1839 in Kastel near Mainz, Germany. He
the youngest of 21 children of Ulrick and Barbara Busch. He came to St. Louis in
1857. He started a brewery supply company.. One of his customers was
Eberhart Anheuser the owner of a small brewery in St Louis. It was through his
business dealing that he met Lily Anheuser, whom he married in 1861. Eberhart
Anheuser could produce beer but was not a good marketer and fell behind in his
bill payments to his son-in-law Aldolphus. Eberhart offered Adolphus part
ownership of the fledging firm and in 1864 Adolphus began working for the firm,
from that point forward the company expanded. The firm's name was changed to
Anheuser-Busch in 1879. In 1880 Eberhart Anheuser died and Adolphus became the
president. In 1901 Anheuser-Busch sold over a million barrels of beer for the
first time. For more information on the early history of the brewery and
Adolphus Busch see
The King
of Beer. Adolphus died October 10, 1913 and is interred in the Busch
mausoleum beside his wife Lily.
The Busch mausoleum is of a Gothic style resembling a small church. The
mausoleum was constructed in 1915 with walls of unpolished Missouri red granite
and the roof of gray-green slate. The gates are constructed of iron with a
hop pattern. The mausoleum contains the remains of Adolphus and Lily
Busch. The in-laws the Anheusers are buried behind the mausoleum.
