"In a ceremony celebrating Pat Nixon’s March 16 birthday, Yorba Linda Girl Scouts planted the Pat Nixon rose several months prior to the Library’s July 19, 1990 dedication. As daughter Julie warmly recounts in her biography of her mother, Pat Nixon’s first love was the outdoors. It started when she was a child at home in Artesia, California where her parents let her cultivate her own small flower garden. When she grew older, no matter how busy she became, she tended her “English garden” of daffodils, narcissus, marigolds and daisies.
Her love of gardens continued throughout her life and as First Lady she was the first to open the magnificent White House grounds to spring and fall public tours. Later, when she joined the President in planning the Nixon Library, she advised on the landscaping. She wanted the centerpiece First Lady’s Garden to be versatile and unique, abundant with color and variety. The day before the Library’s official dedication, Pat Nixon personally welcomed and thanked the Yorba Linda Girl Scouts in the First Lady’s Garden for planting the Pat Nixon Rose."
