There may be a number of reasons why a pub may be named The Ship. Clearly, as with The Sailor or other nautical names, when near the coast, it could have been no more than a familiar sign to attract sailors, particularly around docks.
Inland, however, it may be that the inn keeper has been a (rare breed of) sailor who who has returned from a lifetime of work on the high seas and chooses to set up in business. The Ship is then a simple solution to the problem of choosing a name.
Here The Ship is near the coast where there used to be a dock. No sign of it remains, but the fascinating waymark WM3FPA, 'The Grave of Sambo' links the area to a seafaring past.
